Introduction

Boomer and Athena are both named Sharon, but when I use Sharon I'm referring to Athena, as she didn't start going by Athena until the third season.

Sharon, Doral, and Six Sharon is a copy of Boomer, but she has something Boomer wants: an understanding of what she is. Sharon knows she is a Cylon, and she interacts freely with Six, Doral, and other Cylons. When she is first introduced, she pretends to be Boomer, and accomplishes her task quite well, as she has memories of events Boomer had, and uses those of leaving Helo to get Helo to trust her and run off with her.

How she has those memories isn't really explained, but what I tend to think is that Boomer's memories are kind of downloaded into her prototype, and that all other copies of herself can use them. What's confusing about that is that Boomer has no recollection of events in Sharon's life. That might be because Boomer is a sleeper agent, though.

Sharon also differs from Boomer in the fact that she isn't programmed for destruction. Funny enough, she's apart of an experiment for something completely different: love. I'm not sure yet what purpose it serves, but Sharon was on a quest to make Helo fall in love with her. Perhaps it was to study human emotion, or maybe to see if a human could ever love a Cylon. Whatever it was for, it worked. Sharon accomplished making Helo love her, and they even made love, but as an unplanned side effect, Sharon fell in love with him, and she got pregnant.

Something Sharon and Boomer have in common is that they both have internal struggle. While Boomer struggles with what she is, I think through falling in love with Helo, Sharon begins to struggle morally with what is right. Because she is a Cylon does she have to side with the Cylons? I think she too begins to hate herself, especially after seeing how Helo reacted to her when he found out she is a Cylon.

Sharon went against the Cylons and begins to help Helo escape. This is actually pretty awesome because it gives way to the fact that Cylons like humans have a capacity for not only love, but free will, and that they are a sentient species. The fact that Sharon went against what she was programmed to do means that Cylons can do with their lives what they want, and that they aren't all necessarily evil.
