Rape
After the Pegasus was reunited with Galactica and Admiral Cain learned that Sharon was being held prisoner on Galactica, she sent her Cylon Interrogator, Lt. Thorne, to question Sharon on some pictures of the Cylon Resurrection Ship. Thorne started hitting her before she even had a chance to answer him about the photos. Sharon was often looked at with disgust on Galactica and even threatened in the beginning, but up until that point no one had laid a hand on her, so she didn't understand what was happening. She even yelled, "What the frak?"
It was obvious that Thorne wasn't there to get answers about the ship. Another cylon, a Six, was being held on the Pegasus, and that cylon was raped repeatedly and beat almost past recognition. The officers on Pegasus saw cylons as things they could use, and they used that one to its extent. Thorne and the other Pegasus officers had the same intentions for Sharon. Some officers were even laughing about it in front of Helo and Tyrol. They were wondering if Thorne was going to give them "a chance at her, too," and said that Thorne was going to need to break her in first. Instinctually wanting to protect the woman he loves, Helo almost hit the officers, but Tyrol held him off and made him see that they needed to get to Sharon.
In the episode that originally aired, Helo and Tyrol get to Sharon right before the rape takes place. In the extended version that came with the Season 2 DVDs, they get there during the rape. I guess the rape was too much for television, but since she did actually get raped in the extended version, I assume that it did actually happen. Sharon screamed for her life during the whole thing, and somewhere in the confusion Helo and Tyrol fought their way through officers, and Tyrol pulled Thorne off of Sharon and slung him against a wall. A bolt in the wall went through Thorne's head killing him.
I wasn't happy about the rape (Who would be happy about a rape?), but I liked this turn of events in the series because Helo and more surprisingly Tyrol went out of their way to save Sharon, even though that left them with murder charges and up for execution. The Tyrol/Athena storyline is pretty interesting to me because Athena isn't Boomer, and Boomer is the Eight copy Tyrol fell in love with. I think Tyrol sees a small part of Boomer in Athena, and in my opinion that's why Tyrol helped Helo save her.
It was also nice to see Adama have some compassion for Sharon, as up until this point he still treated her like a thing, despite her having saved the fleet. Adama apologized to Sharon for what happened to her because it happened on his ship, and he told her he was going to do everything he could to make sure that Helo and Tyrol weren't executed. He kept his word to her.
Upon arriving back to Galactica after being beaten and almost being executed by the Pegasus crew, Helo and Tyrol went to see Sharon first thing. Sharon smiled and cried, so happy to see Helo again, and Tyrol stood in the back watching, and then he smiled and walked away. I think through the events of Sharon's rape, he was able to see how much Sharon and Helo really loved each other, and he was finally able to accept them.
Sharon was torn up and bitter after her rape, as can be expected after such a traumatizing experience, but after Helo is brought back safely, her rape doesn't really seem to affect her anymore. She's obviously incredibly strong inside, but from the tough decisions she consistently makes in her life, we already knew that.
