Religion

Religion is very important to the cylons (and humans too, although the two groups practice very separate religions). The cylons are monotheistic, which means they believe in one true god instead of conforming to the polytheistic ideals of the human race.

Christianity? Maybe, although much of the religion isn't referenced in the show. There is no Jesus Christ, for example, and while cylons hold strong to their belief of "God's will," sinning isn't as detrimental as it is in Christian beliefs. The cylons have sex out of wedlock, and murder is almost just as easy.

Athena is religious like the rest of the cylon race, but she internalizes it for the most part unlike the Sixes and Threes, who live and breath religion. She only talks about it when it becomes important, or if asked about it instead of throwing her beliefs on others. Religion incorporates in her story a lot though, especially in the beginning.

The major part of it is Helo. Helo was a character not meant to appear in the series after the miniseries, but the fan reaction was so strong for him that they brought him back and gave him a story. Thank goodness, too, cause we probably wouldn't have had Athena otherwise.

Helo was being experimented with by the cylons, and Athena's part was to make him fall in love with her. The story is vague throughout the first season, but in the second season we learn why it was so important.

Procreation is one of God's commandments. Cylons tried to procreate but couldn't because they're machines. They tried impregnating female humans as well, but to no avail. A theory was formed that the thing they were missing was love. Helo and Sharon were a success because Helo loved Sharon. The other cylons refer to Helo and Athena's baby as "a gift from God."

Athena speaks of her religion briefly on Kobol. She doesn't believe that the legend of Earth and the Tomb of Athena are religious and refers to Athena as "whatever she was." She does believe that the scriptures hold truth though, even if not religious truth. It's proven, as she is able to lead the humans to the Tomb.

Silent Lucidity was created and is maintained by me, Todd, and is part of Dragonzord, net. This shrine was made for fun and is entirely non-profit. It is made up of my own personal opinions and perception. Sadly, I don't own the Eights or Battlestar Galactica. They are property of SciFi. Please don't sue me.
