Boomer's Confession

When Boomer was in the brig with Tyrol for shooting Adama, Gaius Baltar injected Tyrol with a substance to stop his heart and refused to save him unless Boomer told him how many cylon agents were in the fleet. Boomer told him eight, a number I'm sure she made up, as she had just recently discovered she was a cylon herself, but what is the significance of that number, I wonder? Gaius doesn't mention it to anyone, and it's never brought up again on the show.

Most fans I've talked to believe it was random. As a sleeper agent, she obviously didn't have communication with other cylons, so there's no way she could have known. I too believe that there's no way Boomer consciously knew what she was saying, and to her it was random, said in a moment of confusion and stress. I believe there's more to it, though, and I have two ideas.

My first is relatively simple and really doesn't amount to much. It's that eight was the number that came to her head because eight is an important number for her. Boomer is a model eight cylon. There's no way she could have known that at this point in time, and we fans didn't know at the point of the series, but it is interesting. Purely coincidental, though? I don't think so. The Battlestar Galactica writers are either able to adapt really easily, or are capable of making intricate plots whose pieces are all over the place. I go with the latter, and I think that this instance could be one of those pieces.

My second idea is that she was actually right. After Boomer, D'Anna Biers (Number Three), John Cavil (Number One), and a Final Five are revealed to be cylons. That's eight. This could be purely coincidental too, and probably is. It's pretty neat though, because it means Boomer was right, and that means that Boomer was somehow able to gain secrets from other cylons without actually realizing she was one. Maybe it's like how Athena is able to recall on Boomer's memories.
